Program: Education and Construction of the Public Arena

"Democracy is built by those who take part in it"

To NOVA, democracy means organisation of civil society to widen participation in the public arena. And the process of democratisation of the Brazilian society includes the formation of pro-active citizens, able to communicate their demands to governments and enterprises, and possible ways to implement them.

In this way, NOVA develops actions of formation to sensitise entities of civil society and build their capacities, to work in a qualified way in the processes of formulation, monitoring and evaluation of local public policies.

The main objective of the Education and Construction of the Public Arena Program is to prepare diverse social players to take part in the construction of a public agenda of social, economic and cultural policies. When executing projects that transfer knowledge, information and opportunities to entities of civil society, NOVA contributes to their decisive role to democratise governmental processes that interfere in the daily life of communities and social groups in vulnerable situations.

Program: Education, Infancy and the Youth

NOVA understands the importance of Education to make children and the youth able to contribute to the creation of new patterns of social life together, redrawing their future possibilities; not only because of their significant numeric participation, but also specially by its tremendous potential to generate social change.

In this way, NOVA keeps the Education, Infancy and the Youth Program aiming to produce and diffuse knowledge among these segments. By implementing innovative educational experiences, NOVA contributes to the visibility and to the overcome of unequal relationships between adults and children, men and women.

Programa: Articulation and Participation in the Public Debate

The organised actions to transform the social reality strengthen themselves and gain legitimacy when they result from articulation among diverse social movements and entities from civil society.

To increase the impact and the visibility of its joint work with other institutions, NOVA takes part in networks and makes partnerships. Through its Articulation and Participation in the Public Debate Program, it contributes to the creation of proposals and strategies of joint work, considered fundamental for the continuity and intensification of its active and historically consolidated participation in the public debate.

Project: Collectors, Environment, and Recyclables Market

Although law does not regulate the profession of "collector of recyclable materials", this is an important activity to ecological and environmental protection and income generation. NOVA has been building capacity among recyclable collectors since 2001 and has articulated the creation of the Independent Network of Recyclable Materials Collectors of Rio de Janeiro State (Ricamare); a platform organised to strengthen collectors' associations.

The Collectors, Environment and Recyclables Market Project works with collectors from co-operatives and associations of Ricamare in Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias, Mesquita and other towns. Its aims are to contribute to the improvement of their work and health conditions and to widen their capacities to establish new partnerships, making possible the income growth of co-operative's members. NOVA also expects that this project create matured relationships of gender in their workplaces, once the majority of people who work in this sector are women.

To accomplish these aims, 120 collectors will take part in a technical qualification course and will debate about rights of women and gender relationships. The project will also carry on Ricamare meetings and the Collectors' Bulletin, a publication created in 2002 that brings information about prices of recyclable materials, buyers' list, tips about health, and events.

Project: The Young and Education for Attainment of Rights

Many times young people are seen as agents of problems and not of rights. Against to this vision, NOVA believes in the role of young people in the construction of a just, egalitarian and plural society.

The Young and Education for Attainment of Rights Project aims to promote a culture of rights among young people, using reflections about school, culture, and arts in the practice of citizenship. We execute workshops with 80 young people from 15 to 24 years old living in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro and towns of South region of Rio de Janeiro State.

During this project, young people have the opportunity to develop their capacity of observation, discussion and analysis about their local reality. The idea is to stimulate the critical thinking and participation of young people in local social issues. A preliminary survey with 200 young people will identify problems, opportunities and challenges in their communities.

In the last phase of the project, NOVA will promote seminars for civil society organisations and meetings with parents and professionals from the Education sector in public schools to debate experiences and to present their outcomes. In partnership with the "Workshop of Ideas" group, we also planned to create educational spots for radios, among other diffusing materials.

Project: Homeless People: Warrant Networks of Human Rights and Social Inclusion

In the last 25 years, the social inclusion of homeless people has become an obvious and pressing social challenge to governments and civil society. Today, assistance to homeless people prevails in shelters and reference centres which, most of the times, contributes to keep them in the streets.

The Homeless People: Warrant Networks of Human Rights and Social Inclusion Project aims to build a regional strategy of assistance and following of homeless people in 11 towns, articulating governments and civil society organisations that intervene in this public. Beginning with three main areas of work (Rio de Janeiro, Volta Redonda and Petrópolis), the idea is to develop with entities in each town a research about the profile of homeless people and to propose local solutions for each kind of public.

In the second phase, NOVA will promote building capacity workshops for technicians and educators focusing human rights and social inclusion in the assistance provided to homeless people. The work also comprises the participation of NOVA in the National Forum for Studies about Homeless People to propose national public policies, the elaboration of a publication about the subject and sensitising campaigns.
